Vito Candela Vice President-North America, Rocca delle Macie
Vito Candela is the Vice President – North America for the acclaimed Italian winery, Rocca delle Macie. Born in Puglia in 1960, he first came to the USA in 1982 to study Business Administration at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT. Following his passion for watches and jewelry, Vito Candela graduated from the Gemological Institute of America in Los Angeles in 1988. He served as President of the Central - Southern Italy Chapter of the GIA from 1988 to 1990.
While on vacation in Cartagena, Colombia in 1990, Candela decided to move there and start his own food & wine importer. His company’s portfolio included producers like Rocca delle Macie, Corvo di Salaparuta, Giribaldi, Amaro Ramazzotti, Sambuca Molinari, Pasta Divella, etc; and it shortly became one of the largest importers in South America.
In February 1998, coming back from a fishing trip in Colombia’s Amazon river, he was kidnapped by the Colombian guerrilla group FARC. Once released after this harrowing experience, he decided to move his family to the United States. Sergio Zingarelli, owner of Rocca delle Macie, offered him the position of North America Export Director which included the US, Canada, Guatemala, Dominican Republic, Mexico and his beloved Colombia. In 2005 he was promoted to Vice-president North America.
While in Bogotá on a business trip, Candela met his wife Claudia with whom he has two children, Vincenzo and Maria Josè. In his free time, Candela enjoys racing Ducati Superbikes, lifting weights, fishing and of course tasting great wines from all over the world.
